C40 Cities well represented in WGBC excellence awards
Multiple C40 cities are among the recipients for excellence of the inaugural World Green Building Council (WGBC) Government Leadership Awards for Excellence in City Policy for Green Building. WGBC has partnered with ICLEI-International and UN-Habitat for the awards program.
C40 Cities earned awards in four out of six award categories:
- Best Green Building Policy: San Francisco, USA, for the San Francisco Green Building Ordinance.
- Climate Action Leadership Award: Mexico City for its Climate Action Plan as well as its global leadership on the Mexico City Pact (Global Cities Covenant on Climate).
- Industry Transformation Award: New York City for its Greener, Greater Buildings Plan.
- Most Groundbreaking Policy Award: Tokyo, Japan, for the Tokyo Cap-and-Trade Program.
Meanwhile, Birmingham, UK, won the Urban Retrofit Award and Singapore won the Regional Leadership Award.
WGBC CEO Jane Henley had this to say about the awards:
“Our judges have been very impressed with the 22 cities nominated for the award, representing all regions and both developed and developing economies. The city policies receiving awards reﬂect a diverse and effective mix of strategies, from mandatory efficiency targets and performance disclosure, to voluntary incentives and innovative funding mechanisms. We hope their leadership inspires other cities to transform their own built environments.”
