C40 Regional Director for Latin America Manuel Olivera on the impact of the Hybrid Electric Bus Test Program on his region’s cities, and the positive message it sends to the world
A few years ago hybrid buses were just technologies for wealthy countries. A couple of years ago battery electric buses were just a luxurious dream. Today, C40 cities like Bogota, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Santiago de Chile can tell the world that those low carbon techs are ready to run in these cities, and for good.
Thanks to the Hybrid Electric Bus Test Program, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank, Latin America can tell the world that hybrid and electric buses are much more efficient than obsolete diesel vehicles — that they produce from low to zero on-road unhealthy emissions; that they are a step forward in reducing GHG; that they make economic sense; and on top of all this, that they generate hundreds of jobs while fostering low carbon economies and research.
Hard data support these findings and operators from Latin American cities have seen the results in their own factories. Authorities are breaking barriers and discussing the possibilities of setting up some incentives. Now manufacturers are beginning to produce low carbon buses in Latin America and more factories are already announced.
Our cities are leading the way and it’s an exciting opportunity for C40 to share these great developments towards sustainable transport systems with the world.
