At the C40 Mayors Summit in Johannesburg, the C40 News Team spoke with Juan Carlos Villalonga who is President of the Environmental Protection Agency in the Ministry of Environment & Public Space in Buenos Aires.

Villalonga spoke about how critical Buenos Aires’ C40 membership is for advancing the city’s green agenda; Buenos Aires joined C40 in 2011 and is now a Steering Committee member. He reflected on the lessons he will take home from the C40 Summit, particularly those from Johannesburg’s Bus Rapid Transit system.

“The truth is one of the themes that we are most interested sharing with other cities – in particular with Johannesburg – is the process of incorporating Bus Rapid Transit with dedicated lanes… It is important for us to provide the people with facilities for transportation. This is something we have learned from [Johannesburg] that we would like to take home for implementation.”

Buenos Aires also has expertise and on-the-ground climate actions from which other cities can learn, noted Villalonga, citing his city’s recent success in implementing energy efficient public lighting.
