Cities to Take Center Stage During Climate Week
Next week, environmental groups and business and government leaders from around the world will convene in New York City for Climate Week NYC, sponsored by C40 partners, the Climate Group and CDP.
C40 cities represent more than 500 million people around the world, making us a significant voice demanding climate action of world’s leaders. Because of this, we will be front and center during the week-long event, and will also feature prominently in the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit, which aims to to engage leaders and advance climate action and ambition.
C40 will kick off our participation in Climate Week on Monday, September 22, with the awards ceremony for the C40 & Siemens City Climate Leadership Awards. There – along with partner Siemens and many C40 city mayors in attendance – we will announce 10 leading urban sustainability projects chosen by an independent panel of judges as well as the Citizen’s Choice award winner, chosen by popular vote. (If you have not yet voted, you have until September 17 to make your voice heard!)
On Tuesday, September 23, the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit will include meetings among world leaders, and feature eight action areas, which have been identified as critical for keeping global temperature increases to less than two degrees Celsius.
One of these action areas is cities, and C40 Chair, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes will be representing C40 at the cities session (17:30-18:30), along with President of the C40 Board and UN Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change Michael Bloomberg.
