One year after the historic COP21 climate negotiations, mayors and local leaders from over 80 cities congregated yesterday for the start of the sixth biennial C40 Mayor’s Summit. Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera hosts the event. Over the course of the week, C40 will feature 70 speakers covering a range of topics from waste management to mass transit. Attendees will share climate strategies and discuss the importance and implementation of urban solutions to climate change.
Today, following welcome remarks from Mayor Mancera, C40 Board President and U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change Michael R. Bloomberg will speak on the global role of city climate action and the importance of initiatives like the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. C40 Chair Mayor Eduardo Paes of Rio de Janeiro will speak about C40’s achievements under his leadership over the past three years and will formally hand-over to Chair-elect, Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris, who will set out her vision for C40 and outline the organisation’s new four-year strategy.
C40 will unveil its ground-breaking research that explains what cities need to do to meet the ambition of the Paris Agreement and its plan to support cities to deliver, backed by the C40 Steering Committee and strategic funders.
Today, cities from around the world will be recognised for the leadership they demonstrate in addressing climate change at the C40 Cities Awards. Sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies and BYD, the C40 Cities Awards ceremony will be held during the C40 Mayors Summit, where more than 40 mayors from around the world gather to create sustainable and liveable cities for citizens.
