Private Sector Doubles Investment in London’s Cycle Hire Scheme

Celebrating one year since its launch, London’s cycle hire scheme has received an additional £25 million investment and three-year commitment from Barclays, the original sponsor. The award-winning public transport program has been a great success thus far, with over six million hires. The planned expansion brings new cycles and docking stations to the west and south-west of the City; when complete, the total scheme will cover around 65km² of the Capital and around 8,000 hire bikes will be available from 14,400 docking points at hundreds of locations across the City. London Mayor Boris Johnson extolled the benevolence of Barclays in sponsoring what he called “the cleanest, greenest and most enjoyable form of transport available.”
