Building on a legacy of action: Looking ahead to Johannesburg 2014

This week, C40 Chair and New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg held a press conference with the Mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Parks Tau, announcing the 2014 C40 Mayors Summit. Mayor Tau said that the summit is “a historic moment for Johannesburg.” But when the mayors, their staff members, and climate experts gather in 2014, they will not be working from a blank slate. It will be the fifth summit of its kind, all of which have proven to be key moments to accelerate the C40 memberships’ efforts to further reduce carbon emissions and improve the quality of life in their cities.

Video: Mayors Unite to Take Action on Climate Change Impacts at Rio+C40

In 2012, The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group continued to make impressive gains in combating the impacts of global climate change. The C40’s milestone event for the year came in June when C40 mayors from around the world gathered in Rio de Janeiro for Rio+C40 to announce aggressive emissions reductions gains and goals for the future, with C40 Cities Chair and Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg.

C40 Chair, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Mayor of Rio de Janeiro Eduardo Paes met at New York City Hall today. Following their efforts at the Rio+C40 event in June, 2012, the two leaders discussed their commitment to and progress toward the collective C40 commitment to achieve annual emissions reductions of 1 gigaton of CO2e in C40 Cities around the world by 2030.
