C40's first Climate Adaptation Academy was launched today in the city of Rotterdam. City officials and urban planners from more than 60 cities around the world will be invited to learn how to prepare their cities for the inevitable consequences of climate change. The academy will provide cities with training programmes and technical support in climate change adaptation and building resilience.

Yesterday, C40 and the Singapore National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS) held an event at the World Cities Summit (WCS) 2016, a global platform for government leaders and industry experts to address liveable and sustainable city challenges and forge new partnerships. “From Ambition to Action: The Vital Role of Cities in Achieving the Paris Agreement” drew together C40 mayors and city experts from around the world to share insights on the actions they are taking – on mitigation, adaptation and increasing resilience – as well as the key challenges they face in doing so.

In May, 18 C40 cities from around the world gathered in Rotterdam at the Adaptation Futures Conference, the largest adaptation conference of its kind. Over 1,700 city experts, policymakers, scholars and business people from over 100 countries gathered to connect, learn and inspire one another on adaptation practices and solutions. The topics of climate risk and adaptation couldn’t be more timely: C40 research shows that 70% of C40 cities are already experiencing the effects of climate change. Adaptation Futures showcased the efforts of C40 cities all over the world, including Accra, Copenhagen, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, London, Melbourne, New Orleans, New York, Rio, Rotterdam and Washington DC.

Securing investment to prepare and protect cities from the adverse effects of climate change has become one of the most urgent challenges for mayors around the world. In fact, 70% of C40 cities report that they are experiencing the effects of climate change. As major economic hubs and highly dense living spaces, the impact of natural disasters on cities can be severe; for example, the economic cost to New York City of Hurricane Sandy is estimated to have reached $19bn.

At the start of December 2015, all eyes were on Paris for the COP21 climate negotiations, regarded by many as a pivotal moment in determining global climate action. C40 was fortunate to be there on the ground to help showcase innovative and effective climate actions taking place in the world’s cities. Through a series of fantastic events at Paris City Hall, Le Bourget and other iconic locations around the city, mayors from around the world gathered to celebrate successful projects and plans, share their stories and knowledge, voice their ideas, and establish opportunities for action over the next 5 years and beyond.
