Compact and connected development is the preferred form of urban growth. This is a key finding of a major new report released by a commission of global leaders. The New Climate Economy (NCE) report, titled ‘Better Growth, Better Climate’, by the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate, argues that lasting economic growth is possible alongside fighting climate change, but only if urban growth is better managed and investments in mass transit systems are prioritised.

With funding from the Ford Foundation, C40 is launching our newest C40 network on ‘compact and connected’ cities, which will focus on making cities more accessible through transit oriented development plans. The network is designed to help cities share best practices from around the world and access tools and technical expertise needed to reduce urban sprawl and private vehicle travel.

Gunjan Parik, Head of C40’s Transportation Initiative, spoke with city representatives Lisa Seftel and Jeff Ngcobo (Johannesburg) and Juanjo Mendez and Manuela Lopez Menendez (Buenos Aires) to find out more about their cities’ motivation and vision for leading the network. 

Through a range of well-designed bus services, the city of Rio de Janeiro is showing the world its efforts to provide better public transport for the city’s population. By the time four bus rapid transit (BRT) lines will have been opened in 2016, the share of trips made by mass transit (public transport) in Rio is expected to increase from 18 to 63 per cent.

For nearly two years, more than 20 C40 cities around the world have been working together on low emission vehicle technology solutions for vehicle fleets. In a shift reflecting the broadening array of technologies available to deliver these solutions, we are expanding our Electric Vehicle (EV) Network to incorporate other types of low emission vehicles.
