2012 in Review: Mayors’ Voices
For 2012 we were fortunate to have a number of our C40 Mayors share the efforts of their cities via the Mayors Voices segment on our blog.
In March, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes laid out four forward-looking “commandments” to help guide future city developments. His vision – which encompasses elements of sustainability, social responsibility, technology, and mobility – was laid out in even greater detail during a speech delivered at TED 2012.
Later in the year, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles shared how his city experiencing a “transit revolution,” which includes encouraging bicycling, walking, and public transit. The post also features a video on the mayor’s LED lighting initiative, which has been a major success for Los Angeles.
Then it was Lord Mayor of Copenhagen – Frank Jensen – who wrote to highlight the C40 Green Growth Network Inaugural Workshop hosted by his city. The workshop convened representatives from fifteen C40 cities to share and discuss best practices in driving green innovation and economic benefits.
In December, four new cities joined C40, including Oslo and Washington DC. Stian Berger Røsland, Governing Mayor of Oslo, wrote a piece that emphasized the efforts his city has already undertaken toward its goal of carbon neutrality, while Mayor Vincent C. Gray of Washington DC took a unique path and instead provide a video blog to explain the city’s Sustainable DC plan.
All in all it was a great year and we heard from some significant voices. And we look forward to bringing you more in 2013.
