August Rewind: C40 Welcomes Six New Cities…And Counting!
During the month of August, we’ll be sharing a selection of highlights from 2014 thus far. Please enjoy our August Rewind – we’ll be back with more news in September.
In the first half of 2014, C40 welcomed six new cities to its growing global network – a significant achievement. Under the leadership of C40 Chair, Rio de Janiero Mayor Eduardo Paes, one of C40’s strategic priorities is to expand our membership, particularly in China and the Global South.
At the C40 Mayors Summit in Johannesburg in February, we announced the addition of three African cities – Cape Town, Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, nearly doubling the number of member cities in the region. In April, we welcomed Boston, a demonstrated leader in climate action that is implementing a number of climate adaptation and mitigation strategies from which other cities can learn. June saw the addition of two Chinese cities – Shenzhen and Wuhan – bringing C40’s current membership to 69. We are now engaging their active participation in our Networks, Research and other initiatives.
We are proud to count these six new member cities among our ranks, but we will not stop here. Stay tuned for news of more growth in the coming months!
