In a recent interview at the C40 Mayors Summit in Johannesburg, Martin Powell, Global Head of Urban Development at Siemens, said urbanisation is one of the big megatrends of today, and a huge element of why Siemens wanted to bring a partnership with C40 together. The C40 and Siemens collaboration is both a both a technical partnership and a global prize competition to recognize global cities demonstrating excellence in urban sustainability.
Speaking about the technical partnership, Powell noted its value to cities is threefold: helping cities generate credible and reliable emissions data, plan climate action, and, finally, “match” technology and provide strong insight that cities can act on. Having the evidence is the key factor, he stressed.
“C40 is an organization where knowledge is shared. We simply input to that. We put technology into that discussion….The partnership is about helping understand where cities are emitting, and thinking about, in the climate action plans, where the optimum ways are of investing in order to get these big [GHG] reductions.”
