Johannesburg & Rotterdam Featured on CNN International’s The City
This week, five C40 cities are being featured in CNN International’s new series The City, as part of our ongoing media collaboration with the network. To kick off the series, The City featured Johannesburg and Rotterdam, highlighting how these cities are leading the way in addressing the sources and risks of climate change.
“Johannesburg Mayor’s Vision for the Future” features Mayor Mpho Parks Tau, who discusses how an increasing population could stress the city’s resource requirements – but also represents an opportunity:
“It is through urbanization that you have greater potential to develop and grow cities…We have the opportunity not to repeat the mistakes of the past.”
He shows viewers the city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, discusses its renewable targets, and shares the Orange Farm food security project.
The “Rotterdam's Floating Future” episode follows Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb as he showcases the range of innovative solutions Rotterdam is implementing as it faces rising seas. He particularly highlights Rotterdam’s role as the head of the C40 Connecting Delta Cities network, which is helping delta cities from around the world develop policies and take action to adapt to the impacts of a changing climate.
“Water prevention in the low laying delta cities of the world is the only way to prevent big disasters in the future. It is the duty of the mayors to act today and tomorrow. It is also my personal opinion that you can never beat Mother Nature, it is better to learn how to live with Mother Nature.”
Both Johannesburg and Rotterdam have been named finalists for the inaugural C40 & Siemens City Climate Leadership Awards. To learn more about the Awards Ceremony & Conference on September 4 and 5, click here.
