What is climate migration?
The devastating impacts of the climate crisis often force people to abandon the place they call home and seek refuge in new locations. This can be due to extreme weather events, such as floods, wildfires and droughts, or gradual changes, such as sea level rise or land and forest degradation. Cities are taking urgent, inclusive climate action to ensure no-one – no matter where they come from – is left behind.
The C40 and Mayors Migration Council Global Mayors Task Force on Climate and Migration focuses on addressing the impact of the climate crisis on migration in cities, ensuring that all urban policies, including environmental ones, are inclusive of migrants and do not exacerbate existing discrimination.
Why do cities need nature?
Preserving nature and ensuring green spaces are accessible to all improves our health and wellbeing, and helps to protect the most vulnerable from the impacts of the climate and COVID-19 crises.
C40 cities have committed to protect communities from climate risk, meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, and improve overall health and wellbeing by pledging to increase and enhance nature in urban environments by 2030. The pledge will reduce climate risk, support wider ecosystem services, and ensure that natural space is equitably distributed and publicly accessible.
What is a green job?
To build a future where everyone can thrive, we need more green jobs. By taking action to secure a just transition, we can create green jobs for all, helping to foster healthier, thriving cities, while reducing poverty and enhancing social inclusion.
Mayors and trade unionists are pledging to deliver a just transition that leaves no-one behind, by ensuring people are educated and trained in the skills they will need for the future, and confronting long-standing inequalities through the provision of good green jobs.
