Cities Delivering the Most Ambitious Climate Action for a Healthy, Prosperous Future!

Deadline 2020 is a commitment from the world’s leading cities to urgently pursue high ambition climate action, demonstrating how we can deliver on the Paris Agreement. Now is the time to act!

Why Deadline 2020?

Delivering on the objectives of Paris Agreement - “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 degrees [Celsius] above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees [Celsius] above pre-industrial levels” - will require all cities to take transformational actions to reduce transportation emissions, improve building energy efficiency, increase the supply of green energy, and change consumption patterns, while strengthening the ability to deal with the impacts of climate change through adaptation. Deadline 2020 sets out the level of ambition and urgency needed to ensure cities deliver on the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

What support is available?

Our aim is that every C40 city will develop and begin implementing a climate action plan before the end of 2020, which will deliver action consistent with the objectives of the Paris Agreement – an integrated and inclusive plan that addresses the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to the impacts of climate change, and deliver wider social environmental and economic benefits. C40 is providing support to member cities through the C40 Climate Action Planning Programme.

What is a High-Ambition, Paris-Compatible Cliamate Action Plan?

How can C40 help you advance climate planning & action?

Deadline 2020 is a commitment by the world’s leading cities to urgently deliver highly ambitious and equitable climate action. C40 cities — home to more than 700 million people and driving 25% of the global economy — need to have developed and begun implementing inclusive climate action plans by the end of 2020, in order to deliver on the highest ambitions of the Paris Agreement — to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius. These science-based climate action plans will put cities on the path to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become emissions neutral by 2050. They will also make cities more resilient to the impacts of climate change, and create social, environmental and economic benefits for all citizens. The leadership of C40 cities will also inspire others to act – from national and state governments, to businesses and civil society. Together we can create a healthier, more sustainable and equitable future for all.

To enable all cities to make a similar commitment to ambitious climate action, C40 is making its frameworks, tools, and resources publicly available through the Climate Action Planning Resource Centre.
