London, UK  23 April 2018 — Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire; Guadalajara, Mexico; Fuzhou, China and Zhenjiang, China have joined the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, affirming the commitment of these cities to tackling climate change.

The entry of these four cities to the C40 network brings the number of C40 cities to 96, representing more than 700 million people worldwide.

Abidjan, under the leadership of Governor Robert Mambé, has recently undertaken a major programme to plant trees in the city in order to clean the air that citizens breathe and address climate change. The renovation of the Port Authority of Abidjan and the eco-district in the municipality of Marcory are amongst the leading environmental efforts across West Africa in recent years.

The City of Guadalajara is an incubator for sustainability policies that lead to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Mayor Juan Enrique Ibarra Pedroza, has committed to providing every resident with safe and accessible choices to walk, bike, or use public transit; adopting policies and investments that reduce or eliminate the carbon footprint of public transit systems, the city's vehicle fleet, and privately-owned vehicles; and reducing or eliminating the carbon footprint of the solid waste system in Guadalajara. In order to effectively increase the impact of these initiatives, they have been operating all along the metropolitan area.

Fuzhou, the capital city of Fujian Province, led by Mayor You Mengjun, has been dedicated to strengthening the efforts in ecological environment protection, proactively promoted energy saving and emissions reduction, actively advocated green development and the idea of green life. The city has therefore been awarded honorary titles such as National Garden City, National Environmental Protection Model City, National Greening Model City, National Ecological City, and National Forest City on different occasions.

Zhenjiang led by Mayor Zhang Yefei, has been proactively acting to build a low-carbon city. In recent years, the city has built a “low-carbon city construction management cloud platform”, which is the first of its kind, and taken the lead in exploring “innovation in terms of carbon peak, carbon platform, carbon assessment and carbon examination”. It is among the first ecological civilization pioneering demonstration areas, national eco-cities and national forest cities, and it is the only city in Jiangsu province piloting the urban ecological civilization comprehensive development reform.

“I am very pleased to welcome the great cities of Abidjan, Guadalajara, Fuzhou and Zhenjiang into the C40 Cities network. The commitment of each of these cities to creating a sustainable, healthy and prosperous future is critical to implement the Paris Agreement,” said Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris and Chair of C40. “In a crucial year for city-led climate action and just 5 months before the Global Climate Action summit in San Francisco, the growing reach and influence of the C40 network is more important than ever to shape the future, thinking locally and acting globally.”
