A global network helping cities transform how new buildings are designed and built
The New Building Decarbonisation Network supports cities in their transition to net-zero carbon buildings, delivering significant emission reductions alongside co-benefits such as cost savings, energy security, green job creation, healthier buildings, and better air quality.
As part of C40’s wider work on energy and buildings, the network brings cities together to develop and implement higher performance requirements for new construction. It also supports cities in the C40 Net Zero Carbon Buildings Accelerator, which commits them to ensuring new buildings operate at net-zero carbon by 2030.
The network is complemented by C40’s New Buildings Technical Assistance Programme, which supports cities in using building codes and planning requirements to ensure new buildings are ultra-high efficiency.
How the New Building Decarbonisation Network supports collaboration between cities
The network enables cities to:
- share knowledge on developing and enacting building regulations and planning policies
- collaborate on solutions that acknowledge different city powers and contexts
- access combined expertise to overcome technical, political and implementation challenges
- coordinate on compliance, measurement and verification processes
- learn from cities already delivering mandatory building energy codes
Core areas of action of the New Building Decarbonisation Network
Net-zero roadmaps
Developing city roadmaps to achieve net-zero carbon new buildings.
Regulations and planning policy
Developing and enacting regulations and planning policies for ultra-efficient buildings with mandatory building energy codes.
Compliance and verification
Developing and implementing compliance, measurement and verification processes to support city action.
