Eight global cities – Addis Ababa, Athens, Melbourne, Mexico City, New York, Shenzhen, Sydney, and Vancouver – have been awarded dedicated, on-the-ground C40 support through the first annual City Adviser competition. The cities were chosen based on their applications’ strong potential for impact and replication across the C40 network.

The projects implemented by C40 City Advisers in the chosen cities are expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by more than 9 million tonnes C02e over the next five years.

“This Programme represents an important investment in the capacity of C40 cities, not only for those receiving formal support for key projects through City Advisers, but for all cities who will learn from their efforts in the future,” said C40 Chair, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes. “I am excited to welcome this inaugural group of City Advisers to our growing network of practitioners committed to tackling climate change and for them to contribute to our growing knowledge of world-class projects.”

Existing City Adviser appointments in Chicago and Houston will also be continued through a co-funding scheme between C40 and the respective cities, or with additional funding from local partners.
