A global network helping cities transform how people move
The Public Transport Network supports cities to develop and make the case for policies that prioritise, improve and enhance public transport.
As part of C40’s wider work on zero emission transport, the network helps cities deliver public transport that is frequent, reliable, safe, affordable and accessible. It works closely with the Walking and Cycling Network and Land Use Planning Network to integrate public transport into wider sustainable mobility plans.
The goal is to increase the share of trips made by public transport, working towards 80% of trips in C40 cities by climate-friendly mobility options by 2030.
How cities benefit from collaboration on public transport
- Public transport is complex, with many ways to support mode shift. The network provides a space where cities can share plans, successes and failures and get peer advice.
- Cities can learn innovative solutions other cities have implemented, sparking ideas to solve local challenges.
- Each city has areas where they excel and areas needing improvement. Collaboration enables a more holistic approach to overcoming obstacles.
Core areas of action on public transport
Making the case for public transport
Positioning public transport as a vital public service that provides access to jobs, education, healthcare and services, while reducing congestion, air pollution and road accidents.
Financing and funding
Finding creative and innovative solutions for financing and funding public transport, including sustainable commercial revenue streams and advocacy for investment.
Enhancing and promoting public transport
Making public transport more convenient and attractive, using engagement strategies and data to improve service coverage, frequency, safety, reliability, comfort and convenience. Works with C40’s Walking & Cycling Network and Land Use Planning Network.
Resilient public transport
Adapting and improving the resilience of public transport systems to climate change and future pandemics.
Informal transport integration
Integrating formal modes like scheduled buses, BRT and rail with paratransit services, improving quality and labour conditions for essential transport modes in many cities.
How the Public Transport Network supports collaboration between cities
The network enables cities to:
- share knowledge through peer-to-peer learning
- collaborate and problem-solve on shared challenges
- build capacity through training and workshops
- access tools, frameworks, guides and articles
- connect with other cities through C40 support for specific requests
- provide leadership and advocacy for public transport investment
