The Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, becomes chair of the 2022 Urban 20 (U20) cycle, following the G20 Presidency handover from the Republic of Italy to the Republic of Indonesia. Ridwan Kamil, the Governor of West Java (Jawa Barat) will join Governor Baswedan as co-chair of the 2022 U20 Mayors Summit.
The Governor of Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, will chair the fifth U20 cycle set to take place in 2022. Ridwan Kamil, Governor of Jawa Barat, will join Governor Baswedan as co-chair of the 2022 U20 Mayors Summit.
Following the handover from Rome and Milan, the U20 2021 co-chairs, to Jakarta, the participating U20 cities will continue to engage with the G20 and commit to working together with national governments to address the most pressing challenges our world is facing, including recovering from the crises resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the climate emergency, and rising structural inequalities.
Anies Baswedan, the Governor of Jakarta, said: “Cities have captured the world’s attention and as our world continues to urbanise, they have a crucial role to play in fostering an inclusive and sustainable environment for their residents. I look forward to working with all U20 city leaders to amplify our collective voices during the 2022 G20 Presidency, chaired by Indonesia.”
Following in the footsteps of former Chair cities, the fifth U20 Chair will continue to call for enhanced partnership between cities and national governments, as well as increasing ambition at the national level. Jakarta will deliver a U20 agenda aligned with the priorities of the G20 Indonesian Presidency, centred around the theme “Recover Stronger, Recover Together.” This agenda will present another opportunity for the U20 to advocate for a green and just recovery from COVID-19, as well as address other critically important issues, including climate action, structural inequalities, health and equitable access to vaccines, digitalization and growth, and energy transition.
U20 cities will hold a final Summit in Jakarta in the Summer of 2022 and will present their joint recommendations to the government of Indonesia as President of the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit, which is set to take place in Bali on 30-31 October 2022. Urban 20 is a city diplomacy initiative that brings together cities from G20 member states under a common framework to discuss global economic, climate and development issues. The cities form a common position and issue recommendations for consideration by the G20 presidency and Heads of State and Government, enhancing the role of cities as global economic and political leaders.
The U20 initiative is permanently convened by C40 Cities and United Cities and Local Governments, under the leadership of a Chair city that rotates annually. Prior U20 cycles were chaired by Buenos Aires and Paris (2018), Tokyo (2019), Riyadh (2020), and Rome and Milan (2021).
