The C40 Cities Finance Facility will work with Guadalajara, Hermosillo and Monterrey to electrify and improve the cities’ major bus routes.
These projects will improve the quality of life for both users and local residents by providing affordable transport and considerable air quality benefits.

Mexico City, Mexico (2 July 2019) – Electric buses will soon be introduced on the streets of Guadalajara, Hermosillo, and Monterrey, providing a new healthier way to travel. These cities will be supported by the C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF) to develop the business case for introducing electric bus systems in each city. Electric buses save 50-60% of greenhouse gas emissions compared to diesel buses, as well as bringing significant air quality benefits and improving the health of passengers and residents. Citizens can also expect to see decreased noise pollution, reduced congestion and travel times.
The CFF will work with officials in each of the cities to secure the necessary funding to turn the electrification plans into a reality on the streets. The skills developed during this process will make it easier for Mexican cities to prepare and deliver future sustainable infrastructure projects.

Guadalajara has the ambitious plan of electrifying the ‘Peribus’ Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system – a 41km line that will cut travel times from Guadalajara to the wider metro area. This project will significantly cut pollution in the wider region providing significant health benefits to local citizens.
The city of Hermosillo plans to electrify a 23.6km BRT line along Bulevar Solidaridad, a corridor which runs north to south across the city. The plans will fit into the city’s existing plans to develop renewable energy projects throughout the city which will power the buses.
Monterrey will electrify the TransMetro BRT lines, seamlessly connecting the Monterrey metropolitan region to the new metro line improving connectivity and travel times throughout the region.

Introducing electric buses which will not run on fossil fuels will reduce the city’s emissions as well as improving the air quality. As well as providing an improved service, public transport will be far more efficient and bring multiple benefits for the State.
