Maoyr Garcetti declares the 2020s the make-or-break decade for the climate crisis and commits to a Global Green New Deal
Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti today assumed his role as the new chair of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group — a collection of the world’s largest cities committed to taking bold action to combat the climate crisis.
Comprised of 94 cities representing more than 700 million people and one-quarter of the global economy, C40 is leading the charge for a Global Green New Deal — a series of essential steps to reduce temperatures, cut emissions, invest in clean energy, protect our natural resources, and ensure a just transition for workers impacted by rapid changes in our economy.
“When it comes to climate action, no one is doing more than cities, but nobody is doing enough — and the members of C40 know that local leaders have to step up to the plate to win this fight for our people’s prosperity and our planet’s future,” said Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti. “The 2020s will be a make-or-break decade for the survival of our environment and the strength of our economy, and I have no doubt that C40 will stand front and centre in the battle to build a more sustainable, inclusive future for every worker and family in every community around the world.”
Mayor Garcetti takes over the post of C40 Chair from Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, just ahead of a year filled with critical milestones, from the presidential election in the United States to the flagship COP26 UN climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland to the drafting of China’s 14th Five-Year-Plan.
“It has been a great honour to serve as the Chair of C40 Cities,” said Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. “Today, more than 100 cities around the world are committed to the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement, which the latest scientific evidence demonstrates is the only target that matters. Thanks to the Women4Climate initiative there are now hundreds of inspiring young women around the world, learning the skills and making the connections needed to become the next generation of global climate leaders. Together we are reinventing the future cities of tomorrow, through sustainable urban design and architecture. I look forward to working with my friend, Mayor Garcetti, to deliver the vision of a ‘Nouvelle Alliance Verte’ – a Global Green New Deal.
