For this week’s Awards spotlight, we’re focusing on the #Cities4ZeroWaste finalists that are transitioning our cities away from the landfil, and toward a greener way of processing (even repurposing!) urban waste.

The C40 Waste to Resources Network is working with progressive cities looking to transition to a more sustainable management of materials and resources, with actions focused on reducing residual waste generation, prevention, reuse and recycling to keep valuable materials from entering the residual waste stream.

Today, C40 announced the 35 finalists competing in ten urban climate action categories for the fourth-annual C40 Cities Awards, sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies and BYD. The winners will be announced on December 1, 2016, at a ceremony in Mexico City, held alongside the sixth biennial C40 Mayors Summit.

Yesterday, C40 and the Singapore National Climate Change Secretariat (NCCS) held an event at the World Cities Summit (WCS) 2016, a global platform for government leaders and industry experts to address liveable and sustainable city challenges and forge new partnerships. “From Ambition to Action: The Vital Role of Cities in Achieving the Paris Agreement” drew together C40 mayors and city experts from around the world to share insights on the actions they are taking – on mitigation, adaptation and increasing resilience – as well as the key challenges they face in doing so.

C40 is pleased to welcome Auckland – our first member city from New Zealand – to our global network of cities committed to tackling climate change. Auckland is New Zealand’s largest and most populous city – home to 1.57 million people – and the country’s major economic center. With aims to become the world’s most liveable city, Auckland has set a target of 40% emissions reduction by 2040 based on 1990 levels, a goal which is supported through the implementation of the Low Carbon Auckland Action Plan.
