In June of 2015, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Smart Cities Challenge, a competition amongst Indian cities designed to accelerate and inspire more sustainable, citizen centric and effective urban development. The Ministry of Urban Development, which has been working with official knowledge partner Bloomberg Philanthropies on the Challenge, recently announced the first set of winning cities. C40 member city Jaipur was among the top finishers.  

Mahindra World City Jaipur, one of India’s premier integrated business cities, today became the first Asian project to receive Stage 2 Climate Positive Development certification from C40. The Climate Positive Development Programme is a performance-based framework designed to create models for how cities can grow in low carbon ways.

C40 is pleased to welcome Amman, Durban, Jaipur, Quito, and Salvador to its global network of cities committed to tackling climate change and increasing urban resilience. These five cities bring C40’s overall membership to 75 cities, a key milestone in the organisation’s expansion efforts and a testament to the success of city-to-city collaboration on climate change.
