How Freetown is doing it
In 2026, Freetown will continue to focus on tackling heat and waste.
The city will intensify its efforts to protect the 35% of the population living in the city’s 82 informal settlements. This includes installing improved cold storage facilities in five markets, adding shade canopies and expanding cool roofing, all aimed at protecting our most vulnerable residents. At the same time, Freetown is addressing waste, the city’s second-largest source of emissions. In 2026, the city commits to reducing organic waste emissions by 25% by transforming waste into clean energy and expanding composting initiatives, paving the way toward a 40% reduction by 2028. In doing so, Freetown will advance the circular economy and create good green jobs within low-income communities.
