Protecting residents from extreme heat through short- and long-term strategies is a top priority for Phoenix.

In 2026, Phoenix will continue expanding resources to provide immediate relief during periods of extreme heat, including offering evening and overnight respite for an estimated 5,000 residents, heat relief training to city employees, and innovative cooling techniques used by paramedics responding to heat emergencies. This year will mark the second of the city’s five-year plan, Shade Phoenix, to add natural and built shade in the areas that need it most. Phoenix will also continue to pilot cool surface technologies to protect residents and infrastructure.
