In 2027, Curitiba will keep building on the metropolitan taskforce of 20 cities that it’s already brought together to tackle flooding driven by El Niño.
The city is combining sponge parks, retention basins and satellite monitoring, alongside new contingency plans built specifically for the phenomenon. As C40’s Vice-Chair for El Niño Response, Mayor Eduardo Pimentel is raising awareness of how the climate breakdown is making extreme weather like this more frequent and intense in Latin America, and how cooperation between cities can help protect their residents.
