Hangzhou

Hangzhou has worked to continuously improve its public bicycle system, a successful practice in exploring low speed and low carbon urban public transport. From May 2008 when the project was launched to the end of 2019, more than 1 billion travels had been made on public bicycles, which is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.3308 million tons from car travels.

Facing the sudden onslaught of COVID-19 in 2020, Hangzhou public bicycle system was able to remain in operation through appropriate disinfection and maintenance, and meet the basic travel needs of the people. Throughout the year, it had secured nearly 80 million travels for citizens and tourists. In addition to facilitating travels, the system also created enormous environmental benefits, promoted green travel, provided a quiet, economical, and pollution-free solution for combating climate change, and contributed to Hangzhou’s vision of becoming the forerunner in adopting the Beautiful China Initiative.
