A global network helping cities deliver cleaner, healthier air
The Clean Air Network convenes leading cities to develop, implement and share air quality solutions that improve public health, promote equity and strengthen climate action.
As part of C40’s wider work on air quality, the network brings together senior technical staff to collaborate on monitoring, health impact assessment and ambitious policy implementation. It supports cities working towards their C40 Clean Air Accelerator commitments to meet WHO Air Quality Guidelines and implement substantive clean air policies.
Core areas of action on city air quality
Air pollution monitoring and modelling
Improving data collection and analysis by deploying more sensors and exploring new technologies to identify pollution sources, track progress and enforce local policies.
Health impact analysis
Assessing local public health impacts of air pollution and calculating the health benefits of action, strengthening the case for transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Equity and justice
Advancing solutions that deliver clean air, health and socio-economic benefits, with a focus on protecting vulnerable and marginalised communities disproportionately exposed to air pollution.
Clean Air Zones
Supporting cities to design and implement Clean Air Zones tailored to their specific context.
Household fuels transitions
Building the health-based case for transitioning away from fossil fuels and identifying high-impact actions that address the most polluting sources.
Integrated emissions inventories
Bringing together air quality management and climate action planning to create integrated emission inventories and identify shared priority actions.
How the Clean Air Network supports collaboration between cities
The network enables cities to:
- share knowledge through webinars, workshops, study tours and peer convenings, fostering adoption of proven, adaptable solutions
- join dedicated working groups on priority topics for regular peer-to-peer exchange and collaborative problem-solving
- access tailored technical assistance from experts on everything from strengthening policies with sensor data to developing local action plans
- use specialist tools and resources including the AQUA Tool, AQUA transport module, HERB tool, clean air zones toolbox and air quality communications toolkit
