In celebration of Earth Day this year, C40 Chair and Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes was the first mayor in the world to sign the Earth Statement, an appeal to national political leaders for global climate action that outlines eight elements they should discuss at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris at the end of the year.

“I am proud to join scientists and leaders from around the world in calling for ambitious action at the UN climate change conference in Paris,” said Mayor Paes. “Limiting global temperature rise to 2 degrees requires agreement between countries, but cities are playing a crucial role in getting us on the right path. Through networks such as the C40, mayors are leading the way, working together to build a low carbon and climate resilient future.”

To highlight the work of cities on the Road to Paris, C40 and partners have launched the global Compact of Mayors, the world’s largest effort by city officials to combat climate change.

The Earth Statement is organized by The Earth League, a worldwide network of scientists and economists.
