With the Atlantic hurricane season underway, communities along the US Eastern seaboard are braced for Hurricane Irene to strike. Stronger and more frequent storms are one of the effects of climate change, along with sea-level rise and heat stress.
London, the founding C40 City, continues to lead the way on implementing innovative climate mitigation solutions.The Mayor's RE:FIT climate change program is helping hundreds of public buildings to get an energy makeover and save energy costs, following a £2.7 million boost from the European Investment Bank and the Mayor. The funding will pay for a team to support the program, and could help organizations retrofit up to 600 buildings with energy efficiency measures.
London Mayor Boris Johnson is "totally committed" to bringing 100,000 electric vehicles to London, his environment advisor, Kulveer Ranger, said. Charging networks are a key component of this effort, and the city is looking to add 1,300 charging points throughout the city by 2013. David Byrne, American musician and artist, former Talking Heads front man and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer turned sustainable transportation advocate, recently went to Lima, a C40 city, to speak on the importance of non motorized transport in urban development. This was a collaboration between the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima and CCI. Over the course of several days, he discussed with the Clinton Climate Initiative’s Scott Muller the various efforts underway in Lima, Peru to mitigate GHG emission and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
