In Jakarta, transportation and flood control are top priorities for government officials working to address the impacts of climate change. Sutanto Soehodho, Jakarta’s deputy governor, told the C40 News Team that many of the city’s poor are particularly vulnerable to catastrophic weather events like floods, and are likely to suffer worsening economic circumstances and living conditions as a result of climate change effects.
Yesterday the Sierra Club announced it had received a $50 million dollar grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies for its Beyond Coal Campaign. This effort is very complimentary to the work of the C40, empowering local communities and cities to take action on climate matters where national and international entities have been unsuccessful.
“San Francisco prides itself on being one of the most sustainable cities in the U.S.,” the city’s director of the Department of Environment. The city brought its experience with innovative programs to the C40 Mayors Summit in Sao Paulo last month, among them, a plan to get to zero waste by 2020. The city already recycles or composts 77 percent of its waste, the highest rate of any major U.S. City.
“The impact of climate change sees no boundaries,” Edward Yao, Hong Kong’s environment secretary, told the C40 News team last month during the Summit in Sao Paulo. Hong Kong is taking a “multi-pronged” approach to reaching its energy goals, including encouraging behavioral changes for its residents.
New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Chair of the C40, announced yesterday the addition of 70 electric vehicles (EVs) to the City’s fleet, making it the largest municipal clean-air vehicle fleet in the US. To spur the take-up of EVs by New York residents, the City also launched the Drive Electric NYC website, to provide facts about EVs, including a map of charging stations located throughout the city.
