C40’s Africa Hub

C40 Cities has been in Africa since 2013 and is supporting cities in Africa to implement transformative low-carbon and climate-resilient actions. C40 has 11 city members in Africa: Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Cape Town, Dakar, Dar es Salaam, Durban, Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi and Tshwane. For the joining process, please contact the C40 Africa team.

C40 is providing the member cities in Africa the relevant technical support that they need to effectively address climate change. This is done through a wide range of policy support, technical assistance and political engagement. C40 has established 17 thematic networks under six areas of action. Through these networks, African cities are able to share experiences and best practice with other C40 cities globally.

The 11 cities in the African region have committed to developing ambitious, evidence-based climate action plans, and to accelerate implementation of transformative climate actions. To support this process, C40 has initiated a Climate Action Planning program in the African region, which provides expert technical assistance, capacity building, and an embedded City Advisor to provide coordinating capacity in each participating city. The program is funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), with additional financial support from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DMFA), the Cities Alliance, and Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.
