Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Chennai Smart City Limited have installed solar rooftops in GCC buildings. As per the Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy of 2012, the government has set a target of achieving 2,000 MW of solar power by 2015. This policy promotes solar rooftop systems, solar water heating systems, the development of solar parks, etc. One of the measures for promoting solar rooftop systems is that all new government and local body buildings shall be installed with solar rooftops and existing government and local body buildings will be provided with solar rooftops as part of a phased installation. Under this policy, GCC will be implementing solar rooftops in all 1,378 GCC buildings under its ownership.

Scope of work

  1. Installation of solar rooftops in 1,378 GCC buildings through RESCO model
  2. Operation and maintenance of the installed solar rooftops for a period of 25 years
  3. Net metering as a part of the vendor’s scope

Benefits

  • Solar rooftops are expected to meet around 80% of their energy requirements for the GCC buildings as an alternative to fossil fuels and at a cheaper rate of 20% less than grid energy cost.
  • Captive utilization of up to 8.4 million units of solar energy from 5.6 MWp rating solar rooftops under the current net-metering mechanism
  • Annual savings of around Rs. 1.7 Cr. from electricity which is equivalent to 23.43 Crores NPV during the project life cycle
  • Reduction of around 10,000 tons of GHG emissions (tCO2) annually
