Chair of C40 Cities, Sadiq Khan, said:

“Flash flooding and record breaking temperatures across the globe have disrupted transportation and displaced thousands of people. This should be a wake-up call for all of us. The climate emergency is the biggest challenge facing our world and it is clear that we cannot afford further delay.

“As Chair of C40 I applaud the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act by the US House of Representatives. This historic investment will cut carbon pollution while saving Americans money and creating good, green energy jobs. By lowering the cost and increasing the availability of clean energy technologies like wind, solar, heat pumps, and electric vehicles, the Bill will help cities meet their ambitious climate targets. Most importantly, the Bill prioritises investment in disadvantaged and vulnerable communities, many of whom are located in cities where they are disproportionately impacted by climate change and air pollution. This Bill also provides critical funding for affordable housing upgrades which are a top priority for C40 mayors within the United States.

“We can tackle climate change successfully if we act now and act together. From getting a grip on the cost of living crisis, to ending the tragedy of children dying from toxic air pollution, the answer is to end our reliance on fossil fuels and rapidly ramp up investment in the green economy.”
