Can universal principles of climate equity and justice be applied across different geographies in the context of climate resilience, or do the specific social, political, and economic contexts of cities shape how these concerns are understood and addressed?
The Journal of City Climate Policy and Economy (JCCPE), published in partnership with the University of Toronto Press, is part of the work of the C40 Centre for City Climate Policy and Economy. It offers timely, evidence-based research that contributes to the urban climate agenda and supports transformational governmental policy towards an equitable and resilient world.
As cities and urban regions of the Global Majority – that is, the 90% of the global population that live in Africa, Asia and South America – continue to face increasing climate risks and vulnerabilities, the need for just and equitable climate actions has never been more urgent. A growing body of research on climate adaptation critiques current resilience and adaptation practices for perpetuating existing vulnerabilities and inequalities. This critique has fueled calls for the integration of climate equity and climate justice principles into mainstream climate frameworks, particularly in relation to risk mitigation, vulnerability reduction, and the fair distribution of adaptation strategies.
In urban climate planning, especially in the context of the Majority World, debates are emerging around how equity and justice goals should be framed and implemented. The challenges posed by urbanization in the Majority World highlight the need to understand how local contexts shape the way equity and justice are framed and operationalized in urban climate resilience.
