Cities will develop Climate Action Plans that deliver on the objectives of the Paris Agreement, with support from C40 Cities and the British government

Quito, Ecuador (29 January 2019) — Buenos Aires; Curitiba; Guadalajara; Lima; Medellín; Mexico City; Quito; Rio de Janeiro; Salvador & São Paulo today revealed their commitment to bold climate action and pledged to deliver on their share of the Paris Agreement. These commitments were ratified today in Quito, at the launch of the C40 Climate Action Planning Latin America Programme.
C40’s Climate Action Planning Latin America Programme provides direct support to the 10 cities in developing robust and evidence-based long-term climate action plans that align with the ambitious objectives of the Paris Agreement. The support will include a dedicated city advisor based in each city, a series of tailored workshops and trainings, and access to expert technical advice as needed.
These 10 Latin American cities will take transformational actions to tackle climate change by reducing emissions from transportation, buildings, energy production and waste management while strengthening the ability to deal with the impacts of climate change through adaptation. The Programme will support these cities in strengthening the technical expertise to prepare and implement inclusive and evidence-based plans.
Climate action planning is an opportunity for cities to assume their role as key actors in building sustainable development, since climate action plans will provide people with higher living standards, improved public and environmental health, secured ecosystem services, as well as contribute to national climate objectives.
The launch event marked the first day of the C40 Regional Academy and was attended by the Mayor of Quito, Mauricio Rodas, senior city representatives of the participating cities and C40 Cities.

Quito has developed integrated policies to achieve resilient and low carbon development, and we are currently updating the Climate Action Plan 2050. We are honoured to lead and continue this work, and together with other Latin American cities and C40’s support, share our experiences to ensure we meet our commitments, as well as we set and implement more ambitious goals by 2050.” Mauricio Rodas, Mayor of Quito.
