London, UK (3 March 2016) – Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera were today elected to the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) Steering Committee, the governing body that provides strategic direction for the C40 network.

Mayors serving on the Steering Committee represent the geographically diverse members of the global network and serve in rotation: Boston replaces Houston as a representative of the North America region and Mexico City replaces Buenos Aires as a representative of the Latin America region. The new members join Johannesburg, Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, Jakarta, Milan, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Los Angeles, Amman and Seoul on the C40 Steering Committee.

“On behalf of all C40 members, it is my great pleasure to welcome Mayor Mancera and Mayor Walsh as our newest Steering Committee members,” said C40 Chair and Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes. “I commend both mayors on their sustainability efforts in their own cities, and look forward to their leadership in representing their respective regions and C40 as a whole in the global effort to meet the climate change challenge.”

“This appointment confirms Mexico City's commitment to continue advancing in concrete local climate actions to address global challenges,” said Mexico City Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera. “I am honored to contribute with C40's leadership for a sustainable urban future, that will guarantee a promising world for future generations.”

Mayor Mancera will host the 6th biennial C40 Mayors Summit bringing together mayors and sustainability leaders from all over the world, which will be held November 30 – December 2, 2016.

“Climate change is a global issue, and C40 is in a unique position to make a major difference,” said Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “I am honored to join the Steering Committee. Boston is committed to being a leader in that charge and will serve to accelerate our success in the fight against climate change.”

Boston’s Greenovate Boston 2014 Climate Action Plan won a prestigious C40 Cities Award in 2015. The Plan provides a clear road map to achieve Boston’s goal of a 25 percent reduction in citywide emissions by 2020, and also takes a first look at how the city will reach its 2050 goal of an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

As members of the C40 Steering Committee, Mayors Mancera and Walsh will represent C40 in regional forums as well as on the global stage, helping to make the political case for urgent and ambitious climate action as cities take on an increasingly important role in delivering global climate goals.
