Tawanda serves as the Technical Adviser (Waste) for C40’s UCAP Climate Action Implementation (CAI) Programme in Africa. In this role, he provides technical assistance to the C40 cities of Accra, Addis Ababa, Dar Es Salam, Johannesburg, Lagos, Nairobi and Tshwane in implementing plans in line with the Paris Agreement.

Prior to joining C40, Tawanda worked for the GreenCape Sector Development Agency in South Africa, as an Expert Analyst (Circular Economy). His focus ranged from the development of Decision Support Tools aimed at encouraging municipalities in taking a systems approach for the development of integrated waste management; assisting municipalities and the private sector with navigation of the legislative environment for the development of waste projects; conducting material flow analyses in order to identify opportunities for circular economy interventions. In addition, he facilitated engagements between the City of Cape Town and Producer Responsibility Organisations in an effort to synergise efforts for diversion of waste, and support integration of the informal sector as the Extended Producer Regulations came into effect.

His experience also included working on the Digital Global Biogas Cooperation (DiBiCoo), aimed at supporting the development of biogas projects by linking European technology providers with emerging and developing markets – focusing on Argentina, Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia and South Africa.

Tawanda holds an M.Sc and B.Sc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town, where he focused on biodiesel production, and Fischer-Tropsch process for chemical production from syngas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen).
