Eleven cities were honoured today at an awards ceremony in Mexico City. The C40 Cities Awards recognize the world’s most inspiring and innovative cities tackling climate change. Sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies and BYD, the C40 Cities Awards ceremony was held during the C40 Mayors Summit, where more than 40 mayors from around the world gathered to create sustainable and liveable cities for citizens.
BYD first learned about C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group when the city of Shenzhen won the 2014 C40 Cities Award in the Urban Transportation category. Our synergy with Shenzhen began when the city was the first in the world to embrace electrified public transportation by adding substantial fleets of electric buses and taxis in 2011. Shenzhen has since continued to grow their electric fleet, with outstanding results in GHG cuts and a marked improvement in its air quality. In addition to the thrill of seeing Shenzhen recognized as a global climate action leader, their win at the C40 Awards presented us with an invaluable opportunity to better understand C40’s laudable efforts to boost climate action at the municipal level and elevate mayors to a position to be able to make the necessary changes to revert the dire conditions of our environment while improving the everyday lives of city dwellers.
The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) announced an updated lineup of speakers headlining this year’s C40 Mayors Summit 2016, opening this year in Mexico City one week from today. From November 30 to December 2, 2016, the biennial C40 Mayors Summit will convene the largest group of local leaders and climate stakeholders since COP21, and it will be the first such international event since the U.S. presidential election. In addition at a ceremony on the evening of December 1, winners of the annual 2016 C40 Cities Awards – which provides global recognition for cities that are demonstrating climate action leadership – will be announced alongside the Summit.
Today, C40 announced the 35 finalists competing in ten urban climate action categories for the fourth-annual C40 Cities Awards, sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies and BYD. The winners will be announced on December 1, 2016, at a ceremony in Mexico City, held alongside the sixth biennial C40 Mayors Summit.
As of this week, cities – C40 and otherwise – have submitted dozens of projects for consideration to win top prizes at the fourth annual C40 Awards, taking place this December in Mexico City, alongside the C40 Mayors Summit.
