Mayors Voices: Durban Mayor Zandile Gumede leads from the front on measuring emission impacts from energy efficiency initiatives
To fully understand how cities contribute to overall emission reductions, I believe that cities need to measure and report emission reductions from their climate change mitigation projects. Measurement and reporting help us understand potential cost savings from our projects, inform our decision-making processes and help us to identify risks and opportunities of projects. As the old adage goes, ‘You cannot manage what you cannot measure.’
Today, CDP launched its annual InFocus Reports, which catalogue city climate actions around the world. This year, five C40 cities are being recognized in the reports for their leadership in climate change disclosure. These cities have received the highest scores in their regions for the quality and detail of their reported climate related-data.
Beginning today, all C40 member cities are invited to report their climate data through our reporting partner CDP. The annual reporting cycle – now in its 7th year – is designed to help cities report their data in a transparent way, and better track the impact of their climate actions.
C40 is pleased to announce the release of the GPC Interactive Dashboard, an exciting new tool that allows users to explore and compare the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of C40 member cities reported through the Global Protocol for Community-scale GHG Emission Inventories (GPC).
Expert Voices: Johannesburg Councillor Matshidiso Mfikoe – “We are committed and determined to measure emissions”
In March of this year, the City of Johannesburg hosted a regional workshop on emissions measurement and reporting for C40 cities in Africa. At this workshop it was clear that African cities are not only determined to reduce GHG emissions, they are interested in measuring, reporting and publicly disclosing emissions data.
Expert Voices: Malcolm Shield, Climate Policy Manager for the City of Vancouver, on the future of greenhouse gas emissions reporting — the inventory specialist
With the recent launch of the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories (GPC) there is a clear need to develop a widely recognized set of professional skills so that cities can hire people trained in the compilation of community-scale emissions inventories.
