    The science is clear – even 2°C of global warming would be dangerous – now everyone has to step up

    Thanks to today’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ‘Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C ’,  leaders in government, business and civil society now know that they must reset their goals to limit global average temperature rise to no more than 1.5°C, a commitment already made by many C40 mayors.

    IPCC to Give Cities Special Focus

Building on the success of COP21, this decision adds to the engagement of cities in tackling climate change and provides new opportunities for collaboration among cities, states and the international scientific community.

    Mayors, city networks and urban stakeholders worldwide call for an IPCC Special Report on Cities and Climate Change

    Cities are already facing the impacts of climate change and are highly vulnerable to a range of climate hazards, including sea level rise, street flooding, landslides, droughts, epidemics and severe heat waves, which threaten the heath, well-being and livelihood of citizens. Cities are integral to fighting climate change; while they are responsible for 37–49% of global GHG emissions, and urban infrastructure accounts for over 70% of global energy use, research shows that urban policy decisions made by 2020 could determine up to a third of the remaining global carbon budget that is not already ‘locked-in’ by past decisions.
