Argentinian capital chosen by C40’s Mayoral Steering Committee to host 2022 gathering of mayors committed to bold action on climate change

Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta today announced that the City of Buenos Aires will host the C40 World Mayors Summit in October 2022. Buenos Aires was selected as the host city for the landmark climate event by the 16 mayors that make up the C40 Steering Committee.

The C40 World Mayors Summit takes place every three years with the goal of bringing together the mayors and leaders of C40’s 96 member cities to share bold ideas, showcase innovative solutions and stand together to create a sustainable, prosperous, and equitable future for the world’s greatest cities. The Summit, hosted by Buenos Aires, will also connect the world’s mayors together with CEOs, philanthropists, investors, academics and advocates united in the shared mission of charting a net-zero path.

Previous C40 Summits have been hosted by London, New York, Seoul, São Paulo, Johannesburg, Mexico City and Copenhagen.

“Buenos Aires is proud of our leadership on climate action and its extraordinary benefits to our citizens and their wellbeing,” said Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, Mayor of Buenos Aires. “Now is our moment to unite the mayors of Latin America and the world to push for faster, more ambitious action in the lead-up to COP27. We will demonstrate that mayors are ready to make a difference and that cities are the smart places to invest for the greatest climate return.”

The C40 Summit will focus on key themes driven by the current state of affairs as the world prepares to recover from COVID-19. Specifically, mayors and stakeholders will discuss delivering on a fair and just transition from the pandemic and pollution-based economies, governing with urgency to address the climate emergency, and increasing the flow of green finance for both climate mitigation and adaptation projects, especially across the Global South.

“I am thrilled that Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta and the people of Buenos Aires will host the C40 World Mayors Summit this coming October,” said Sadiq Khan, Chair of C40 Cities and the Mayor of London. “Cities are leading the way when it comes to tackling the climate emergency and I want to ensure C40’s resources help cities around the world to accelerate their efforts to tackle the climate emergency, reduce toxic air pollution and address inequalities through inclusive climate action. C40 mayors represent over 700 million people across the world – and it is their interests that we will have at the fore during the C40 World Mayors Summit in Buenos Aires ahead of COP27 and beyond.”
