面对污染、拥堵、不平等和其他可持续性挑战，城市与地方政府在提出新的创新性解决措施上颇有建树。为了给城市/地方政府提供分享交流其创新经验的平台——从而最终提升城市地区的可持续性，世界城市和地方政府组织、世界大都市协会和广州市一同在2012年设立了“广州国际城市创新奖”，又称“广州奖”。
