About the programme

The African Cities for Clean Air Initiative has supported 11 African cities in strengthening air quality management through data collection, policy development, and implementation over the past three years.

Launched in 2022, the programme aims to empower African Mayors to increase public awareness of the importance of clean air across the continent and call for policy changes that address health challenges caused by poor air quality.

From 2022–2024, the African Cities for Clean Air Initiative provided air quality technical assistance to five cities – Addis Ababa, Dakar, Durban, Johannesburg, and Lagos – on projects that will reduce harmful emissions and protect public health. African Cities for Clean Air has also delivered a set of tailored knowledge exchange opportunities and workshops for the 11 participant cities in the continent.

The initiative will continue for an additional two years (2025-2026), providing tailored technical support for policy implementation, sharing knowledge and lessons between cities and showcasing mayors and their world-leading commitments to delivering clean air.
