On February 15, 2004, the TransJakarta busway began revenue operations along a 12.9 km corridor through the city centre. The line cost USD$2M/km and was implemented in an unprecedented 9 months, following a visit by Jakarta’s Governor to the BRT system in Bogotá, South America in May 2003. TransJakarta provides services for 39 million people using 265 diesel and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) buses – it reduces an estimated 120,000 tons CO2 annually and has improved safety and efficiency.
